Flight
When a direct or convenient same-day air option exists for your dates, it preserves far more vacation time than the road route.
Bus / overland service
Expect border formalities and ferry logistics. Exact operating days and journey times must be checked for your travel date.
Rental car
Only choose this because you want the journey itself. Cross-border vehicle permissions, insurance, ferry timing and fuel planning all need to be confirmed in advance.
Why does the road go through Chile?
The Argentine side of Tierra del Fuego is separated from mainland Santa Cruz by the Strait of Magellan and Chilean territory. A practical road journey therefore exits Argentina, crosses part of Chile, uses a ferry and later re-enters Argentina.
Is driving worth it?
For a 7–10 day first trip, usually not. The flight saves a major chunk of time. Driving becomes more attractive when you are intentionally building a longer road trip and value the route as part of the experience.
What must be checked close to departure?
Border documentation, ferry status, current road conditions, rental-car authorization for Chile and the actual transport timetable. These are not details to assume from an old blog post.
